Falkland Islands Totem Pole

Curiosity of homemade signposts to British forces' hometowns

Address Stanley, Falkland Islands

A cluster of homemade wooden signposts pointing the direction and distance to home towns in the UK and beyond, started in the years after the 1982 war by British troops stationed on the islands. New signs are added regularly by visiting service personnel, and the post has grown into a colourful, eccentric Stanley landmark.

It sits near the public jetty on the waterfront — easy to find on a walk between Christ Church Cathedral and the dockyard museum. A reminder of how far Stanley is from anywhere: London is 12,950 km away.
