Several mid-19th-century sailing ships beached themselves in Stanley Harbour after being damaged rounding Cape Horn, finding shelter here but never sailing again. The most prominent of the surviving hulks is the Jhelum, an 1849 East Indiaman, whose timber frame still stands on the foreshore east of the town centre.
The Lady Elizabeth, a three-masted iron barque beached in 1936, sits further out in Whalebone Cove and is best photographed at low tide. These wrecks are a tangible reminder of the islands' role as a refuge of last resort for vessels in trouble in the South Atlantic.
