Laguna 69 is perhaps the most spectacular day trip from Huaraz. The trail climbs steeply from the Huascaran National Park entrance at Cebollapampa, gaining 700 metres over about 7 kilometres to reach the lake at 4,600 metres. The reward is one of the most intensely turquoise bodies of water you will ever see, framed by the vertical rock and ice faces of Chopicalqui and Chacaraju.
Most visitors go on an organised day trip from Huaraz, which includes transport to the trailhead and back. The hike takes three to four hours each way at a comfortable pace. Start early — the parking area fills quickly, and afternoon clouds can obscure the views. Altitude is the main challenge: if you have been in Huaraz for fewer than two days, the climb to 4,600 metres will be punishing. Bring layers, as the temperature drops dramatically at the lake even in summer.
