Laguna Wilcacocha sits at 3,720 metres in the Cordillera Negra, less than an hour's drive from Huaraz, and offers what many consider the best panoramic view of the Cordillera Blanca of any day hike in the region. The walk from Huaraz or the trailhead at Tarica takes two to three hours each way, gaining around 600 metres. It is an excellent acclimatisation hike for those planning longer treks.
The lake itself is modest — a dark alpine tarn — but the view across the Santa Valley to the glaciated peaks of the Cordillera Blanca more than compensates. On clear days, Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Huandoy, Artesonraju (the inspiration for the Paramount Pictures logo), and many other peaks are all visible in a single sweep. Go early to avoid afternoon clouds. The trail is clearly marked from the main road and can be walked without a guide.
