Immaculate Conception Cathedral

The modernist concrete cathedral on the Plaza de Armas.

Address Jr. Tarapacá, Pucallpa

Pucallpa's cathedral is a 1970s replacement for an earlier wooden church and is a striking exception to the colonial-baroque norm of Peruvian cathedrals: a soaring, almost brutalist concrete shell with stained-glass windows depicting Amazonian scenes — toucans, river dolphins, native women with woven jars — interspersed with the Stations of the Cross. The interior is unexpectedly serene.

The cathedral faces the Plaza de Armas, with its mango trees and busy mototaxi stand, which functions as the social centre of the city in the evenings. Worth fifteen minutes on a walk through the centre.
