Mercado Bellavista and the Port

The chaotic riverside market and the loading docks for Iquitos-bound boats.

Mercado Bellavista is the main daily market of Pucallpa — a sprawling, cheerfully filthy maze of stalls selling jungle fruit (camu camu, aguaje, copoazú), river fish (paiche, dorado, paco), live chickens, baskets, machetes, and bushmeat that you may or may not want to look at too closely. The medicinal-plant stalls in the inner aisles, run mostly by vegetalistas, sell bark, roots and resins still used in traditional Amazonian medicine.

The market backs onto the river port where cargo boats load for the multi-day voyage downriver to Iquitos. Wander the dock and watch the longshoremen rolling oil drums and timber up the planks — it gives a vivid sense of how much of the central Amazon still moves by water. Keep an eye on your bag.
