Canaima Airport

Canaima Airport (IATA code CAJ) is a single grass-and-asphalt strip on the edge of the village, served by small twin-engined Cessnas and Islanders from Ciudad Bolívar and Puerto Ordaz. It is the only practical way in and out for visitors: there is no road.

The flight itself is one of the highlights of any Canaima trip. From Ciudad Bolívar the route runs for an hour over rainforest and savanna with views of distant tepuis; many operators add a deliberate detour past the cliff of Auyán-tepui and over Angel Falls on the way in or out. The terminal is little more than a roofed concrete pad with a check-in desk, but the apron and the windsock against the tepui horizon are themselves photogenic.
