Isla Orquídea — Orchid Island — is a sandy stop along the Río Carrao route to Angel Falls, usually visited for lunch on the return leg. The island has a basic camp where most operators serve a hot meal of grilled chicken or fish with rice; the surrounding banks are lined with the wild orchids that give it its name.
This is the place travellers swim, dry off, and string up hammocks while the guides cook over open fires. Howler monkeys are often heard in the canopy on either side of the river; macaws and toucans are common overhead. It is not a destination in its own right but a memorable rest stop that breaks the long return journey.
