Oran has more of a nightlife than most Algerian cities — a legacy of its French and Spanish past and its status as the birthplace of Rai. Cafés along the Front de Mer corniche fill in the evening; mint tea, ice cream, and shisha are the usual order. Alcohol is harder to find than in Algiers but not impossible: a handful of bars in the larger hotels and in the old French quarter still serve.
