The Imam al-Houari Mosque is the spiritual centre of the Sidi El Houari quarter, built around the tomb of the 14th-century Sufi master after whom the neighbourhood is named. The current building is a late Ottoman rebuild of a much older shrine; the simple whitewashed exterior conceals a richly decorated interior with green-tiled walls and a carved wooden ceiling.
The tomb chamber is visited daily by the faithful seeking baraka — spiritual blessing. Non-Muslims should approach with discretion and dress modestly. The streets around the mosque are some of the most atmospheric in the old quarter.
