The main Catholic church of Ouidah, built in 1909 by French missionaries and elevated to a basilica by the Vatican. A long brick-and-stucco building painted ochre yellow, with a pair of slim bell towers and a calm Latin-cross interior.
What is striking is its location — directly opposite the Python Temple, the two doorways more or less facing each other across the road. The juxtaposition is the point: Beninese society has long held that one may belong to both at once, and many of the congregation also keep household Vodun shrines.
