Route des Esclaves

Three-kilometre path from the old slave market to the Door of No Return

A wide red-earth track that runs from the centre of town to the beach, retracing the route along which captives were marched to the ships. Along the way are sculpted markers commissioned for the 1992 Ouidah '92 festival, the Tree of Forgetfulness (where the enslaved were forced to circle to "forget" their identity), the Zomaï holding-house, and the Tree of Return that was thought to allow the souls of the dead to come back to Africa.

The walk takes about an hour at a slow pace, longer if you stop at each marker. A guide from the Ouidah Museum of History or one of the registered associations at the start of the route is well worth the modest fee — without one you miss most of the meaning of the markers.
