A small but ambitious contemporary art museum, opened in 2013 by the Fondation Zinsou, the leading private supporter of contemporary art in Benin. The Villa Ajavon itself — a two-storey Afro-Brazilian mansion built in the late 19th century — is part of the experience: ornate ironwork, restored ochre stucco, courtyards used for installations.
Exhibitions rotate every six to twelve months and have included major shows of work by Romuald Hazoumè, Cyprien Tokoudagba, and Calixte Dakpogan. Free admission. A welcome contrast to the heaviness of the slave-trade sites.
