Chobe Boat Safari

The boat safari is the signature activity in Chobe and one of the best wildlife experiences in Africa. Open motorboats or pontoon craft drift along the Chobe River at dawn or dusk, covering the 15km stretch between Kasane and the park boundary at a pace determined by what's happening on the banks. Guests sit at river level, close to the water, with the animals.

The cast of characters is reliable: hippos in pods near the bank, crocodiles on sandbars, and the ever-present elephants coming down to drink and bathe. The birdlife is exceptional — African fish eagles, saddle-billed storks, carmine bee-eaters in season, and dozens of waders, kingfishers, and waterbirds that are difficult to see on a land drive. The sunset boat, returning as the light turns gold and the elephants begin their massive evening migration to the water, is one of the classic African experiences.

Boat safaris operate from Kasane's waterfront hotels and lodges, and day-trippers from Victoria Falls can book them on arrival. Most depart at 7am and 3pm, lasting two to three hours. The sunrise departure often has fewer people and better photography light. Private charter boats are available for those who want more control over the pace and direction.

A story
The boat safari model at Chobe is different from most African wildlife experiences in that the animals are not at all concerned by boats on the river. Elephants swim and bathe directly alongside them; hippos surface at arm's length; crocodiles sunbathe on banks the boat nearly touches. The absence of the jeep barrier — the sense that you are level with and close to the animals in their own element — makes the experience distinctive even for people who have done many game drives.
