Kasane

Kasane (population around 10,000) is the main town for Chobe National Park, sitting on the Chobe River at the park's northeastern corner. It is not a destination in itself but a practical base with a growing range of lodges, restaurants, and services. The main street runs along the river, with several camps and lodges occupying the stretch between the town and the park entrance gate.

A small international airport serves Victoria Falls arrivals (30 minutes by air from Zimbabwe) and has scheduled connections to Maun, Gaborone, and Johannesburg. Most visitors to Chobe come through either Victoria Falls or Maun, staying at one of the Kasane lodges for two to three nights. The town has ATMs, a supermarket, fuel, and basic vehicle spares — though for serious 4WD equipment, Maun or Johannesburg are better stocked.

The Kazungula Ferry, 8km east of Kasane, crosses the Zambezi into Zambia. The vehicle ferry has been replaced by a new bridge (opened 2021), which has dramatically reduced the crossing time. Livingstone in Zambia — with its own access to Victoria Falls from the Zambian side — is easily reached from Kasane in under two hours.

A story
Kasane sits near the "Four Corners" where Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe come closest to meeting — actually, they nearly share a single point, though technically Botswana and Zambia have a short land border and the four countries don't quite touch at one spot. The geopolitics of that small stretch of river is surprisingly complex: it was the subject of an International Court of Justice case, a Namibia-Botswana boundary dispute, and repeated surveys. The tourist sign with all four flags is more enthusiastic about the geometry than the cartographers are.
