Mokoro through the Okavango Delta. A mokoro is a traditional dugout canoe, poled silently through the crystal-clear channels of the Okavango Delta. You glide past papyrus reeds and water lilies while hippos grunt nearby and malachite kingfishers flash overhead. Multi-day mokoro trips with a local poler, camping on islands, are the definitive Botswana experience. Book through operators in Maun -- budget options exist alongside the luxury lodges.
Elephants on the Chobe River. Chobe National Park has the highest concentration of elephants in Africa -- an estimated 120,000. In the dry season, hundreds gather along the Chobe River at sunset, wading, drinking, and playing. A boat cruise at golden hour here is one of the great African wildlife spectacles.
The Kalahari and San culture. The Kalahari is not the barren desert its name suggests. It is a vast savannah of golden grasses, acacia scrub, and surprising wildlife -- gemsbok, springbok, brown hyena, and the famous black-maned Kalahari lions. The San (Bushmen) have lived here for tens of thousands of years. Cultural tours near Ghanzi offer a chance to walk with San trackers, learn about traditional plant uses, and see some of the oldest continuous human culture on earth.
Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. These enormous pans -- the remnants of an ancient super-lake -- are among the most surreal landscapes in Africa. In the dry season they are a blinding white expanse stretching to the horizon, good for quad biking and sleeping under a sky packed with stars. After the rains (December to April), the pans fill with shallow water and attract vast flocks of flamingos and migrating zebra herds numbering in the tens of thousands.
Tsodilo Hills rock art. The Tsodilo Hills, rising abruptly from the flat Kalahari scrub in the northwest, contain over 4,500 rock paintings -- the highest concentration in the world. The San consider the hills sacred, a place of deep spiritual significance. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tsodilo is remote and rarely crowded. The paintings span thousands of years and depict animals, humans, and geometric patterns. It is a quietly extraordinary place.
