Cathédrale de l'Immaculée Conception

The Cathédrale de l'Immaculée Conception sits behind the Place du Cinéaste in the heart of central Ouagadougou. Its twin towers of red laterite mudbrick are visible from across the centre, and the simple, dim interior gives a welcome shelter from the afternoon heat.

Services on Sunday morning are well attended and worth dropping in on — the singing, in Mooré and French, is energetic, and visitors are made welcome at the back. Outside service times the cathedral is usually open during daylight; donations are appreciated.

A story
The cathedral is the largest mud-brick church in West Africa and was completed in 1934 by Cardinal Paul Zoungrana's predecessors. Its towers were built from local laterite using techniques borrowed from the Mossi vernacular tradition, which is why it sometimes gets called an example of Sudano-Sahelian architecture transposed into a Catholic frame.
