Brasseries du Cameroun Plant

The Brasseries du Cameroun plant on the southern edge of the city is one of the most significant industrial installations in western Cameroon. The brewery is part of the Castel Group's Cameroonian operations — the same company behind the ubiquitous Castel Bière bottles that appear on every table in every bar from Douala to Ngaoundéré. The facility is not open for public tours but its presence is felt throughout the city: Bafoussam is a noticeably good city in which to find cold beer at a reasonable price.

The surrounding industrial quarter on the road south toward Baham is worth knowing about if you are travelling in that direction. The main road south is also the route to Chefferie Bandjoun, making it a natural passing point. The plant's distinctive tanks and infrastructure are visible from the roadside, an incongruous but entirely characteristic piece of the West African highland landscape where traditional culture and industrial capitalism sit within sight of each other.

A story
Castel beer — sold as Castel Bière in Cameroon — is brewed at this plant and distributed across western Cameroon and into Chad and the Central African Republic. The Bamiléké are disproportionately represented in Cameroon's private sector, and the Bafoussam plant is one of the larger formal employers in the region, a fact that locals point to with considerable pride.
