Bafoussam is most easily reached from Douala or Yaoundé by road, either in a shared agency car or by bus. The journey from Douala (about 250 km) takes three to four hours on a good day; from Yaoundé (about 300 km via the Bafoussam road) it is a similar four to five hours. Several bus companies run the route — Général Express, Global Voyages, and Buca Voyages all have departures from Douala's Bonabéri bus station. The roads are paved and generally in reasonable condition, though the mountain sections west of Bafoussam can be slow.
Bafoussam International Airport (BFX), 6 kilometres northeast of the city centre, has domestic services to Douala and Yaoundé operated by Camair-Co, though schedules are subject to change and demand sometimes outpaces supply. Flying makes sense if you are short on time; otherwise the road journey through the highlands is itself worthwhile.
From Bamenda to the north, shared taxis and minibuses make the two-hour run via the highlands road, a spectacular drive. From Foumban to the east, bush taxis cover the 70-kilometre route in about 90 minutes on the paved road. The central gare routière off Rue du Commerce is the main hub for all intercity buses and shared taxis.
