Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Victoires

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Victories is Bafoussam's Roman Catholic cathedral and the seat of the Diocese of Bafoussam. The building occupies a prominent position near the city centre, its twin towers visible from several surrounding streets. The architecture is a product of mid-twentieth-century missionary building — solid, functional, and larger than the surrounding streets quite prepare you for.

The interior is worth entering for the quality of the natural light and the scale of the space, which on a Sunday morning fills to capacity with a congregation that sings with the kind of full-throated commitment that makes Cameroonian Catholic liturgy genuinely moving to sit through. The cathedral complex includes the bishop's residence and diocesan offices. Sunday morning Mass, typically at 9am, is the best time to visit.

A story
The diocese of Bafoussam was created in 1970 when the West Region's growing Catholic population warranted its own bishop. The cathedral became the seat of a diocese that now covers one of the most densely Catholic areas of sub-Saharan Africa — the Bamiléké have among the highest rates of Catholic practice anywhere on the continent.
