Lac Baleng

Lac Baleng is a crater lake sitting at 1,377 metres in the Baleng chiefdom, about 11 kilometres north of central Bafoussam — close enough for a comfortable half-day trip by moto-taxi. The lake occupies the floor of an ancient volcanic crater, roughly 400 metres long and 250 metres wide, rimmed by arboreal vegetation including eucalyptus stands and dense secondary forest. The trekking path around the lake takes 30 to 45 minutes at a relaxed pace, involving some modest scrambling over stone outcrops and the occasional liana to navigate.

The water holds fish and the forest around the crater supports a reasonable range of highland birdlife. The setting is genuinely peaceful — the lake sees very little visitor traffic and retains a sense of isolation unusual this close to a city of a million people. Take the road toward Tchada from the Carrefour Auberge intersection north of Bafoussam and follow the track down to the lake. A moto-taxi from the city centre costs around 500–1,000 FCFA each way.

A story
Lac Baleng, also known by its local name Neheu Long, was inscribed on Cameroon's national heritage list in 2020 as an element of intangible cultural heritage. The Baleng chiefdom regards the water as sacred and uses the lakeside for ritual ceremonies; outsiders are expected to ask permission before approaching the inner shore.
