Marché A is the main commercial market in central Bafoussam and the most rewarding place in the city for visitors. It sprawls across a large covered and open-air complex near Rond Point Biao, and on a busy morning it is genuinely extraordinary — produce from the surrounding highland farms piled in colourful mounds, livestock, household goods, and in the craft section, the Bamiléké woodwork, brass jewellery, beaded bags, and indigo-dyed textiles that this part of Cameroon is known for. The best carvings come from workshops in the surrounding chiefdom villages, and a proportion of what you see here is made by the sellers themselves.
The market operates every day but is busiest in the mornings and on the days that coincide with surrounding village market cycles. Bargaining is expected but not aggressive by West African standards. If you want to buy Bamiléké crafts — masks, stools, bronze figurines — this is the right place; the tourist-facing craft stalls near the chefferie are more convenient but carry a significant price premium. The nearby Marché des Fruits (5.4780, 10.4192) is worth a stop for fresh produce.
