Sal Rei is walkable. Beyond the town, the island's roads range from reasonable tarmac to rough tracks passable only by 4WD or quad bike. Quad bikes and buggies can be rented in Sal Rei and are a popular way to reach the remote beaches; drivers should be cautious on soft sand and dunes. Shared taxis (aluguers) run between Sal Rei and the larger villages. Hiring a local driver for the day is an efficient way to cover the interior and the far beaches.
