Heliopolis War Cemetery

Commonwealth war graves cemetery with 1,700 graves from World War I

The Heliopolis War Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery on the northern edge of Heliopolis, containing 1,742 graves from the First World War — mainly soldiers who died in Egypt during the Palestine campaign or from disease. The cemetery is immaculately maintained to the CWGC standard, with the characteristic white Portland stone headstones in regular rows and the stone cross of sacrifice at the far end.

The cemetery provides an unexpectedly reflective space in one of Cairo's busiest suburbs. The register at the entrance lists all burials, and the standard CWGC information board explains the campaign context. It's a short drive or walk from the main Heliopolis commercial area and takes about 20 minutes to walk through. The contrast between the quiet order of the cemetery and the surrounding Cairo sprawl is striking.
