Dahab is an ideal base for exploring southern Sinai. The most popular day trip is to the Blue Hole and Ras Abu Galum, a stunning coastal nature reserve accessible by camel or on foot from the Blue Hole parking area. The snorkeling there is world-class and the setting is unforgettable.
Mount Sinai and St. Catherine's Monastery are about two hours inland by road. Most people do an overnight trip, climbing the mountain for sunrise and visiting the monastery afterward. For something more adventurous, Bedouin guides lead camel treks and jeep safaris into the Colored Canyon and remote desert wadis. Day trips to Petra in Jordan by ferry from Nuweiba are possible but long -- allow a very full day or better yet, stay overnight.
