Port Fuad sits directly across the Suez Canal from Port Said, accessible by a short free ferry ride from the main waterfront. It was built in the 1920s as a planned residential city for Suez Canal Authority employees, and it retains a different character from Port Said — wider streets, more green space, and handsome early 20th-century buildings in a variety of colonial styles.
The ferry ride itself is worth doing for the views of the canal and the lighthouse. Once across, the streets of Port Fuad are pleasant to walk: quieter than Port Said, with a more residential atmosphere and some excellent traditional Egyptian coffee houses. The return trip gives a fine view of Port Said's waterfront from the water.
