Port Said Lighthouse

The Port Said Lighthouse, built in 1869 to mark the northern entrance of the Suez Canal, is one of the city's most distinctive landmarks and an early example of reinforced concrete construction. The white tower rises about 55 metres above the waterline and has been guiding ships into the canal for over 150 years.

The lighthouse is not generally open for interior visits, but it can be photographed easily from the corniche and the surrounding gardens. Its position at the junction of the canal and the Mediterranean makes it a natural endpoint for a walk along the waterfront.

A story
When it was built in 1869 for the canal opening, the Port Said Lighthouse was the first structure in Africa or Asia to be built from reinforced concrete. The technique was so new that the engineers were not entirely confident it would work — they hedged their bets by using unusually thick walls. It has stood perfectly well for over 150 years and remains in operation today.
