Kaldi's is Ethiopia's own specialty coffee chain, named after the legendary 9th-century goat herder who supposedly discovered coffee when he noticed his goats became energetic after eating certain berries. Several locations are spread around Addis, with the Bole Road branches being the most convenient for visitors.
The coffee is genuinely excellent — well-sourced Ethiopian beans roasted in-house, prepared as espresso, pour-over, or the traditional jebena ceremony. The pastries are good, the WiFi is reliable, and the air conditioning is welcome on hot afternoons. Less characterful than the old-school Tomoca, but consistently high quality and comfortable for working or planning.
