Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, and Addis Ababa takes this heritage seriously. The city is full of cafes where you can drink a macchiato or a traditional jebena coffee for a few birr. The bar scene runs from casual neighbourhood spots serving draught beer and tej (honey wine) to Bole Road clubs playing Ethio-jazz and pop. Tomoca on Wavel Street is a local institution for coffee. For something livelier, Bole Road has salsa clubs and bars with a young, cosmopolitan crowd.
