The highlands around Addis Ababa offer several worthwhile excursions. Entoto Hill, just north of the city, gives panoramic views and has a small museum and the octagonal Entoto Maryam Church. Debre Libanos, about 100 kilometres north, is one of Ethiopia's most important monasteries, set on the edge of a dramatic gorge. The prehistoric site at Melka Kunture, 50 kilometres south, has stone tools dating back over a million years. All are reachable as half-day or full-day trips by taxi or organised tour.
