Reputedly the largest open-air market in Africa, the Mercato sprawls across several square kilometres around the main bus station. You can find anything here: spices, textiles, carpets, traditional clothing, metalwork, and religious art. Bargaining is expected. The sheer scale can be disorienting, and hiring a local guide for a few dollars is a practical move. Keep valuables out of sight, as pickpocketing is common.
