Fendika Azmari Bet

Traditional azmari music venue keeping a centuries-old Ethiopian tradition alive

An azmari bet is a traditional Ethiopian drinking and music venue where azmari musicians perform — professional bards who improvise songs on the masinko (a single-stringed fiddle), combining music, poetry, and sharp social commentary in real time. Fendika is one of the most celebrated, performing in the Piazza neighbourhood.

The atmosphere is intimate and the performances are genuinely extraordinary if you appreciate improvised musical storytelling. The azmari tradition is ancient and was historically associated with court entertainment, but the bards were also social critics who could say things in song that could not be said plainly. Fendika's owner Melaku Belay is also a renowned dancer. The venue opens in the evenings; dress is casual. Drinks are inexpensive.
