Tej bets -- literally "tej houses" -- are traditional bars serving tej, the Ethiopian honey wine. The drink is sweet, slightly fermented, and served in flask-shaped bottles called bereles. The atmosphere is casual and the prices are very low. Tej bets are found throughout the older parts of the city, particularly around Piazza and Merkato. They are some of the most authentic spots in Addis to sit, drink, and watch the city go by.
