One of the city's most established cultural restaurants, Yod Abyssinia has been hosting travellers and locals for decades in a large compound near Bole. The format is familiar: a selection of injera-based dishes served on a shared mesob (woven table), followed by traditional music and dance performances representing Ethiopia's different regions and ethnic groups.
The food is a notch above many tourist-oriented restaurants — the tibs (sautéed meat), kitfo (Ethiopian steak tartare), and vegetarian fasting dishes are all reliably good. The shows include shoulder-rolling eskista dancing, which is distinctive enough to be worth seeing even if cultural dinner shows are not normally your thing. Book ahead on weekends.
