Ziway, also called Batu, sits on the western shore of Lake Ziway, one of Ethiopia's freshwater Rift Valley lakes. The town is a working roadside stop on the Addis Ababa-Hawassa road, but the lake gives it a reason to pause: papyrus boats, fishing skiffs, waterbirds around the jetty, and occasional hippos further out on the water.
This is not a polished resort town. The appeal is simple and outdoorsy, and it works best if you come with a driver or arrange a boat locally. The standard outing starts at the Lake Ziway jetty, where fishermen land their catch and boatmen offer birding and hippo trips.
The lake also has a cultural layer. Its islands are home to Zay communities and old Ethiopian Orthodox traditions, especially Tulu Gudo Island, whose Maryam Tsion monastery is tied to local stories about the Ark of the Covenant. Ziway is close enough to Addis Ababa for a long day trip, but it feels much more like the Rift Valley than the capital.
