Local Chop Shop

A chop shop is the Gambian equivalent of a canteen — a small, often unlabelled eatery that serves a short menu of whatever has been cooked that day. In Bakau, the streets away from the beachfront have several of these. Benachin and domoda are the staples: the first is a deeply flavoured one-pot rice dish cooked in tomato with fish or meat; the second is a peanut-based stew that is richer and thicker. Both come with rice and are filling, cheap, and cooked properly.

Ask locally for where people eat. The best chop shops change and don't advertise. A meal costs a fraction of what you'd pay on the tourist strip.
