Distant Relatives is an ecolodge, backpackers' hostel, and music venue rolled into one, perched on a cliff above Kilifi Creek. It has become something of a Kenyan institution — the unofficial centre of an alternative scene that draws everyone from yoga teachers and remote workers to musicians and overland travellers.
The bar and restaurant are open to non-residents and serve some of the best food in town. The annual Kilifi New Year Festival, held on the property, brings several thousand revellers for a four-day music and arts festival that is the closest thing East Africa has to Burning Man.
