Kilifi Creek is the defining feature of the town. The mangrove-fringed inlet runs several kilometres inland from the Indian Ocean, sheltering one of the best natural harbours on the East African coast. Sailing boats and small yachts are anchored along its length, and the calm, brackish water is ideal for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.
Dhow trips on the creek can be arranged through any of the waterfront hotels. A typical half-day outing includes snorkelling off Mida Island, lunch on a sandbank exposed at low tide, and a sunset return under sail. Boatyards along the south bank build and repair traditional dhows using techniques that haven't changed in centuries.
