Kuruwitu Marine Sanctuary is a community-led conservation area on the coast south of Kilifi, created to protect a stretch of reef that had been damaged by overfishing and destructive practices. Its travel value is practical as well as ethical: visitors can snorkel with local guides while supporting a project that has become a model for locally managed marine areas on the Kenyan coast.
The reef is not a glossy resort attraction, and conditions depend on tide, visibility, and sea state. When the water is clear, however, Kuruwitu offers coral heads, reef fish, and a more grounded alternative to package-boat snorkelling. It is best arranged ahead rather than treated as a spontaneous beach stop.
