Thaba Bosiu

Thaba Bosiu lies 25 km east of Maseru on the road toward Roma — a flat-topped mountain rising sharply from the plain, with steep cliffs on every side. A short path leads up through the gap that once formed the main defensive pass, and the summit holds the ruins of Moshoeshoe's homestead and the royal graveyard where the founding king and several of his successors are buried.

The visitor centre at the base offers compulsory guides — about M150 plus tip — and the walk up and around takes roughly two hours. Allow extra time for the cultural village below, which gives a good introduction to traditional Basotho life.

A story
Thaba Bosiu — 'mountain of the night' — is the flat-topped sandstone fortress where King Moshoeshoe I gathered the Basotho people in the 1820s during the regional upheaval known as the Difaqane. Three separate armies tried to take the mountain and all three failed; the position became the heart of the nation. Moshoeshoe is buried on the summit, and the site remains the spiritual capital of Lesotho.
