University of Malawi (Chancellor College)

Chancellor College, the largest of the University of Malawi's constituent colleges, is on the eastern side of Zomba on a sprawling campus of low brick buildings and lawns. It was established in 1965 as part of the new country's flagship university and has been the country's leading academic institution ever since. The campus is open to visitors during the day; the main quadrangle and the surrounding gardens make for a pleasant walk.

The college bookshop occasionally has academic titles on Malawian history, politics, and literature that are hard to find elsewhere. The visitor centre near the main gate can point you to lectures and events open to the public. The student presence keeps the surrounding area lively, with cafés, photocopy shops, and cheap restaurants targeted at a young clientele.
