Zomba is a walking city. The colonial centre with its mature gardens and surviving administrative buildings is the natural starting point — most of the buildings worth seeing lie within a 30-minute walk of the State House. The market and the university campus add modern Malawian life to the old colonial picture. The Zomba Plateau directly above the city is the major attraction and usually a half- or full-day trip; you can drive up, hike up, or get a ride to the top and walk back down.
