Grand Gaube

Northeast Mauritius fishing village with a sheltered lagoon, working harbour, and offshore island views.

Grand Gaube is a quiet fishing village on the northeast coast, about 15 kilometres from Grand Baie. It has a sheltered lagoon and working fishing harbour with calm water and fine views to the offshore islands — Coin de Mire (Gunner's Quoin), Flat Island, Round Island, and Snake Island — which can be visited by boat excursion. The village is less touristy than the north coast resorts and has a more authentic feel. Cap Malheureux, 5 kilometres to the west, has a picturesque red-roofed church that is one of the most photographed landmarks on the island, and the large Goodlands market just inland is the biggest in the north of the island.

Eating Out

Grand Gaube has a handful of small restaurants along the coastal road, plus the dining rooms of the two large resorts. The local style is straightforward Mauritian Creole — grilled fish with achard and rice, fish vindaye, octopus curry, gateaux piment. For more variety head to Grand Baie or eat at one of the resort buffets.

Getting There

Grand Gaube sits at the end of the coastal road that runs north from Port Louis through Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux. The drive from the airport, on the south of the island, takes around an hour and a half; from Port Louis around forty-five minutes.

Local buses connect Grand Gaube with Goodlands and Grand Baie roughly every half-hour during the day. A hire car is the easiest way to combine the village with the wider north coast.
