Source Bleue de Meski

About 21 km south of Errachidia, a spring bubbles out of the foot of a rocky escarpment and fills a turquoise pool ringed by date palms — the Source Bleue de Meski. The water comes out cool and fresh year-round, and a campsite next door makes it a popular swimming stop on the route south toward Erfoud and Merzouga.

The site is busiest on Fridays and weekends when families arrive from the surrounding towns. Come during the week or in the early morning to have the pool more or less to yourself. From the top of the escarpment above the spring you get a good view down the Ziz Valley and across to the ksar of Meski opposite.

A story
The pool was enlarged by the French Foreign Legion in the 1930s, who turned the spring into a swimming hole for soldiers on leave from the Sahara forts. The concrete edge of the legionnaire pool is still visible at one end of the basin.
