Tafilalet Palmery

The Tafilalet is one of the largest oasis regions in Morocco, stretching south from Errachidia through Erfoud toward Rissani. The palmery — several hundred square kilometres of date groves, ksour, and irrigated gardens — lines both banks of the Ziz River and is best seen from the road or from the flat rooftop of a kasbah guesthouse.

The date harvest in October is the most animated time to visit. Farmers climb the palms to cut the heavy clusters and the souks fill with fresh medjool and khalt dates. The rest of the year the palmery is quieter but never dull — a continuous ribbon of deep green against the bleached rock of the desert plateau.

A story
The Tafilalet was once the richest oasis in the Sahara — a waypoint on the caravan routes from sub-Saharan Africa to the Mediterranean. At its height it supported over a million date palms. A bayoud disease outbreak from the 1960s onward devastated the groves, and the number of trees has never fully recovered.
