Zaouia Sidi Ahmed Tijani

Shrine of the Tijaniyya founder, the most influential Sufi order in West Africa

The Zaouia (shrine complex) of Sidi Ahmed Tijani houses the tomb of the founder of the Tijaniyya, one of the most important Sufi orders in the world. Ahmed Tijani settled in Fez in 1798 after a vision in which he said the Prophet Mohammed appeared to him directly, and spent the rest of his life here. He died in 1815.

The zaouia is located in the heart of Fes el-Bali, identifiable by the stream of pilgrims, particularly West Africans in elaborate robes. Non-Muslims are not permitted inside, but the surrounding alley is busy with traders selling religious texts, rosaries, and incense. The contrast with the souvenir stalls elsewhere in the medina is striking — this is a living religious site, not a tourist attraction.

A story
The Tijaniyya order founded by Ahmed Tijani in Fez in 1782 spread across the Sahara and into sub-Saharan Africa with remarkable speed. Today it has an estimated 100 to 150 million followers, making it possibly the world's largest Sufi brotherhood. Its influence is especially strong in Senegal, Nigeria, and Mali, and thousands of West African pilgrims come to Fez each year specifically to visit this shrine.
