Talaa Kebira (The Big Slope)

The main artery of Fes el-Bali — the medina's commercial spine

Talaa Kebira — the Big Slope — is the primary thoroughfare of Fes el-Bali, running downhill from Bab Boujeloud deep into the medina toward Al-Qarawiyyin. It is the most straightforward route through the labyrinth and the logical starting point for a medina walk. The street is narrow but navigable, flanked by shops selling everything from mobile phones and plastic buckets to spices and carved wood.

The first section, nearest Bab Boujeloud, is the most tourist-oriented, with souvenir shops and restaurants. Walk further in and the character shifts toward everyday commercial life: tailors, electronics shops, food vendors, blacksmiths. The Bou Inania Madrasa and the Dar al-Magana water clock face each other across the street partway down. At the bottom, near Al-Qarawiyyin, the street narrows to alley-width and the crowds thicken. Keep walking downhill and you will reach the tanneries eventually.
