Medina Hammams

Traditional steam baths in the medina, open to visitors

Taroudant's medina has several traditional hammams open to visitors, and using one is one of the more authentic experiences in the town. The local hammams operate on separate hours for men and women, and the price is minimal. Bring flip-flops, a towel, and a kessa (exfoliating glove) if you have one — you can usually buy them in the souk beforehand.

The ritual is straightforward: you sweat in increasingly hot rooms, scrub with the kessa or pay an attendant to do a vigorous exfoliation for you, then cool down and rest. It takes about an hour done properly. Ask at your guesthouse for the nearest hammam to your accommodation; they're embedded in the residential quarters and not always signed from the outside.
