The Ramparts

Six kilometres of intact Saadian-era city walls

Taroudant's six-kilometre circuit of walls is one of the most complete sets of medieval ramparts in Morocco. The Saadians built them in the 16th century when this was the capital of their empire, and they have changed little since. The best section runs along the south and east, where the walls are tallest and the views clearest.

Go by bicycle or horse-drawn carriage — walking the full circuit in the midday heat is a slog, but cycling it in the late afternoon, when the light turns the ochre stone gold, is one of the better hours you'll spend in southern Morocco. Bike rentals are available near Place Assarag and Place Talmoklate.

A story
In the 16th century Taroudant served as the Saadian capital before the dynasty moved its seat to Marrakesh. The walls the Saadians built have outlasted their empire by four centuries.
