Macuti Beach

Long beach along the northern peninsula, busy in the evenings with local families

Beira's main beach runs the full length of the city's northern peninsula. The sand is grey-brown and the water is silty from the Pungwe estuary, so it is not a swimming beach in the sense of Bazaruto or the southern Mozambican coast. What it has is a long, open stretch of sand and a generous evening breeze that pulls everyone out of town as the sun goes down.

Local families bring picnics, fishermen launch from the south end, and informal bars set up plastic tables along the upper beach. The Macuti Lighthouse and Shipwreck at the northern point is the headline sight. Avoid the beach at night and don't swim out far — the tidal currents through the inlet are strong.
